In a recent Q&A session with CommercialSearch, ESD now Stantec Senior Acoustics Project Manager Scott Hamilton shares his views on the evolution of the open office and why acoustics plays such a critical role.
The CommercialSearch online feature, Expert Insights, delves into Hamilton’s thoughts on the pros and cons of open floorplans in the workplace. While hybrid remote work is becoming the norm for many companies, the benefits of coming into the office at least part of the time are also being rediscovered.
Hamilton says it is critical for these face-to-face (and side-by-side) work experiences to be as productive and positive as possible. Creating a welcoming environment is key. According to Hamilton, “Excess noise exposure can contribute to fatigue and stress, as well as result in unnecessary distractions and disrupted workflow.”
While there is no one size fits all solution to open office design, Hamilton says careful consideration of workplace acoustics as well as a good understanding of employee dynamics and needs can lead to better office designs.
Scott Hamilton has extensive experience working with acoustics and has successfully managed numerous projects, including data centers, concert halls, universities, healthcare facilities, and more. He freely shares his knowledge to further ESD now Stantec’s mission to build communities and improve society through the built environment.
