Improved building system technology is making today’s smart buildings safer, more energy efficient, and more attractive to tenants. But ESD, now Stantec Studio Leader and Senior Security Consultant Coleman Wolf says building automated system (BAS) improvements could come with new vulnerabilities.
Writing for a recent issue of REJournal, Wolf poses the question “Are hackers outsmarting your intelligent building?” He says as the modern workplace evolves to be more accommodating to returning workers and hybrid employees alike, the possibilities for exciting new spaces are virtually unlimited.
But beware of unexpected vulnerabilities you may be creating for cyber attackers looking to exploit sensitive company data. He says something as simple as a web-connected thermostat or lobby monitor may give bad actors a toehold to worm their way into more complex systems.
Wolf’s article offers a checklist to follow to help protect your assets. Perhaps the most important step is to perform cybersecurity testing of your systems on a routine basis.
Coleman Wolf shares his knowledge from over 25 years of security management and security engineering experience to promote ESD, now Stantec’s mission to enhance communities and to improve society through the built environment.
