Going the Extra Mile to Support Green Education, September 4, 2013

CONGRATS to our Climate Cycle Team!

ESD had nine riders participate in the 2013 Ride to Recharge, Climate Cycle’s signature charity ride event.

We raised $7,380 and biked over 680 miles to support environmental education and renewable energy projects in Chicago area schools. Our annual Beer, Bikes, and Bosses fundraiser took place in June with 10 bosses riding on stationary bikes – the more money donated, the longer they stayed on. It was a huge success with almost every rider maxing out their donations. The happy hour event, along with a generous company match, helped us raise almost 70% of our total funds!

As July passed, and remaining training days were shrinking, our team got together for a practice ride down to Three Floyds Brewery. A fantastic Chicago summer day set the backdrop for our ride down the Lakeshore path, through the Burnham Greenway trails, and down to Munster, Indiana. Some good old liquid carbs and pub fare gave four of the eight riders the additional energy needed to bike 30+ miles back to Chicago and stop at the Velodrome to watch some matches on the way.

Finally, on Saturday morning August 17th, Dan Carrillo and I started the team off as we rode 62+ miles from the Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum to the Indiana Dunes. After several rest stops, one flat tire, some beach time, a delicious dinner, and a raging bonfire, we hit the hay to rest up for Day Two.

The remainder of our ESD team (Corey LiDonne, Brian Bozell, Curtis Aubry, Marina Horchin, Edna Lorenz, Mike Stark, and Kurt Karnatz) met up bright and early Sunday morning for some breakfast at the Dunes before heading off on the 62 mile trek back to Chicago. The weather was perfect (even though Co-Captain Curtis’ bike tire exploded while baking in the sun’s rays!) After one more flat and a lot of Halsted potholes, we all made it to the finish and celebrated with the students and other riders.

Thanks again to everyone that donated, participated in Beer, Bikes, and Bosses, and supported our team. The money goes towards a great cause, and we couldn’t have done it without you all.
