Mitigating the Impact of Stack Effect

Stack effect — the movement of air into and out of buildings due to air buoyancy — can engender risks for developers of supertall and megatall buildings. What is the best way to mitigate the impact of stack effect?

A paper developed by Mehdi Jalayerian and Tyler Jensen entitled “Methods to Mitigate Costly and Disruptive Stack Effect in Super and Megatall Towers” — published by the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat (CTBUH) — shows that stack effect can be lessened if analyzed holistically and addressed early in design. This will result in energy savings and other benefits for developers.
