When Does a Bank Look Like a Tech Startup?

Consider the interior of the traditional bank. Dull desks, bored tellers, a generally gray tone — it often does not motivate customers to keep coming back.

During a recent bank project in Texas, ESD’s Dallas and Chicago offices worked together, and the final appearance of the Gensler-designed space differed significantly from the standard look. With its open spaces, collaborative work areas and coffee bar in the lobby, the new 6,000-square-foot office of Bank SNB in Austin looks — well, not like a bank.

“That’s the idea,” said Ed Curtis, who runs Bank SNB’s Austin operation. A community feel was more in line with the bank’s desires.

To help the client, ESD designed lighting fixtures and controls created to be 15% below area code requirements for lighting power density.
