Office space electrical system designs are changing to accommodate changing work styles.

Earlier this year, ESD Senior Project Engineer Miles Brugh joined a group of other electrical engineering professionals to discuss building electrification during a roundtable discussion hosted by Consulting and Specifying Engineer magazine. In the article, “Offices change, accommodating electrical and power requirements,” Brugh says many building owners are looking to offset the carbon footprint of larger projects by introducing a renewable energy component.

Brugh also says incorporating flexibility into electrical system designs helps owners meet the specific needs of tenants. He says:

“The flexibility opens opportunities with the leasing teams to be more aggressive with tenants that do have higher than normal requirements. Many times, larger tenants are looking to provide more amenity space that require more capacity, such as kitchens. This flexibility in the system can make the building more attractive for those types of tenants.

The group also discussed trends building owners are following and the use of smart grid or microgrid in creating more sustainable facilities.

Miles Brugh shares his knowledge as a senior electrical engineer with other industry professionals as part of ESD’s mission to improve society through the built environment.
