Incremental steps toward building electrification can help keep costs down for building owners and operators looking to reduce their facility’s carbon footprint.

Practice Leader for High Performance Buildings Andrew Lehrer says aiming for 100-percent reduction of onsite operational carbon is not always the most effective strategy. Lehrer made his comment while being interviewed for a Daily Commercial News magazine article, “Hybrid electrification better than all or nothing: consultant.”

Lehrer says falling into an “all or nothing” mindset can actually be harmful. According to Lehrer, “…it doesn’t let developers, landlords and asset managers understand that they can make a big impact in their facility today while also allowing their facility to be responsibly and easily upgraded in the future when technology grows and develops.”

Lehrer says a 70 or 80 percent win today is better than a zero percent win ever. He urges facility owners to find an option within their current budget that can also be expanded down the road.

Andrew Lehrer freely shares his experience and ideas through articles and interviews with industry publications as part of fulfilling ESD’s mission to improve society through the built environment.

Why Should Building Owners Consider Electrification as a Sustainability Strategy?

Using electricity in lieu of natural gas can position a facility to reduce its on-site operational carbon footprint over time. That is especially true as utility sources such as wind and photovoltaic reach cost parity with coal and natural gas making the grid profile more renewable each year.
