ESD Pros Help with Planning and Presenting at Decarbonization Conference

Described as a one-day deep dive into decarbonization strategies relevant to Chicago and the surrounding region, the upcoming event will feature a diverse slate of presenters from the architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) community.

ESD Senior Building Analyst Ken Griffin is a board member of the Chicago Chapter of the International Building Performance Simulation Association (CHIBPSA), one of the groups that put together the “Design 2 Decarb” event scheduled for June 21 at the University Center in Chicago. Griffin says, “I’m looking forward to the conference and its detailed examination of Chicago-area decarbonization policy, carbon data analysis, best practice case studies, and carbon reduction strategies for the city’s and the state’s future.”

The first session of the conference, “Chicago & Illinois Sustainability, Energy Efficiency, and Decarbonization Policy,” will feature a panel of industry professionals including ESD Practice Leader for Commissioning and Energy+Eco Saagar Patel, who will offer his expert knowledge gained while working on two influential advisory boards at the state and local level including the Illinois Energy Code Advisory Council and the Building Decarbonization Working Group for the City of Chicago. Patel will be offering clarification and understanding of the new 2021 Illinois Energy Code.

Registration for the Design 2 Decarb event, hosted by the Chicago Chapter of IBPSA-USA and AIA-Chicago, is open. The day-long event will also feature presenters including local leading architects, engineers, scientists, students, government officials, utility company representatives, product designers, and environmental, social, and governance (ESG) professionals.

Saagar Patel and Ken Griffin freely share their experience, knowledge, and professional expertise in pursuit of ESD’s mission to improve society through the built environment.

Incremental steps toward building electrification can help keep costs down for building owners and operators looking to reduce their facility’s carbon footprint. (Read about building electrification options.)

Why Should Building Owners Consider Electrification as a Sustainability Strategy?

Using electricity in lieu of natural gas can position a facility to reduce its on-site operational carbon footprint over time. That is especially true as utility sources such as wind and photovoltaic reach cost parity with coal and natural gas making the grid profile more renewable each year.
