It’s great when hard work is rewarded.
American School & University and SchoolDesigns.com announced the projects and firms selected to be featured in the 2018 Architectural Portfolio issue to be published this fall, and the Louis I. Kahn Citation was awarded to Malcolm X College and School of Health Sciences in Chicago, a project ESD worked on.
According to the jury, the finished project is “engaging, fun, contemporary and elegant. Many cool historical touches (are) overlaid on a fundamentally sound and ambitious design.” The jury added it’s “a bold, modern design that fits well near a densely populated urban center.” The 8-story replacement college for the new Malcolm X college is located across the street from the existing college and was designed to cater to the City Colleges of Chicago’s need for a technology and science campus in their network of colleges.
ESD provided design services that included new mechanical, electrical, plumbing and fire protection systems for the building, including a fully condensing boiler plant, 1,700-ton water cooled chilled water plant, condensing domestic hot water heaters, low flow plumbing fixtures, LED lighting, hybrid fire alarm system, sprinkler and standpipe system with fire pump, emergency lighting and multiple electrical services.
The security scope for this project included card reader access control, video surveillance, panic alarms, video intercoms, emergency call stations, and optical turnstiles. In addition, a two-officer security command center and dedicated lobby security desk were designed to further enhance security operations.
Additionally, ESD provided energy modeling services for LEED compliance documentation of Energy and Atmosphere Prerequisite 2 and Credit 1 under LEED Version 2009. Energy modeling was performed at crucial design milestones to track the potential energy impact of various design considerations. ESD also provided LEED MEP documentation and assisted with Malcom X becoming LEED-NC v2009 Gold certified.
