Cooling the Classics

Set to open in the spring of 2011, the new Mansueto Library will house some of the world?s rarest manuscripts 45 feet below the Chicago water table with a green house on top. ESD designed a three-tiered mechanical system in order to accommodate the unique HVAC needs of the Grand Reading Room, the archival storage area, and the preservation laboratories. The University of Chicago?s Mansueto Library will be a leader in innovation, efficiency, and conservation raising the bar for future university libraries.
