New facility proposed for Chicago’s Fulton Market could add to city’s growing life sciences ecosystem.
Plans for the proposed 500,000 square foot life sciences lab building were recently unveiled by veteran Chicago developer Mark Goodman. In a statement, the company confirmed the 19-story lab and office facility would be located at 400 North Elizabeth Street, between Metra rails at the northwest corner of Elizabeth and Kinzie streets. “We’ve assembled a team of experts, from environmental specialists to geotechnical and structural engineers to electrical and traffic consultants, to ensure we design and deliver a best-in-class facility that propels Chicago to the forefront as a top-tier life sciences hub,” Goodman said in the statement.
Practice Leader for High Performance Buildings, Andrew Lehrer, says ESD will play a critical role in the project. Lehrer added, “We are excited to be an integral part of this project, which will help establish Chicago as a Life Sciences market leader in the years to come. With the elevated demands for infrastructure and energy that these facilities entail, our entire team embraces our responsibility to deliver an elegantly designed, resilient, and high-performing asset that will serve as a cornerstone for Chicago’s flourishing life sciences ecosystem.”
If the project wins City Council and community approval, work could begin on the project that is expected to take 18 months to complete. The development would add to other research and pharmaceutical facilities setting up operations in the area. According to Mayor Lori Lightfoot, “Chicago is on the map and growing as a life sciences innovation hub and center.”
ESD is providing mechanical, electrical, plumbing, fire protection, fire alarm, automation, technology, building analytics, and sustainability consulting engineering services.
