The Seemingly Impossible is Made Possible in McCormick Place

Rapidly turning a convention center into a makeshift health-care facility during a pandemic is no easy task.

There were a number of challenges to transforming McCormick Place into a 300-bedroom facility this spring, but ESD and other companies overcame them, explained Randy Ehret in an article on page 40 of Architectural Products magazine.

An example? The heating and cooling coils on the existing air units were not properly sized to operate under these new conditions. To address this issue, “We calculated the maximum amount of outside air that could be brought into the space and developed a spreadsheet the authorities could use so they could adjust the amount of outdoor air for each air-handling unit,” Ehret explained.
