ESD Overcomes Challenges in Big Navy Pier Project

The millions of visitors who visit Navy Pier will get the chance to spend the night there in 2019.

The Curio Collection by Hilton on the eastern end of Navy Pier will include a 30,000-square-foot rooftop restaurant and bar, according to a report by the Chicago Tribune. For the project, ESD provided engineering services including mechanical, electrical, plumbing, fire alarm and fire protection, along with sustainability and energy modeling services.

What challenges did the firm face with design, and how did we overcome them?

“One of the largest challenges was the integration of the significant added impact to the infrastructure,” explained Project Manager Dan Burggraaff. “An additional challenge was connecting the existing MEP services where a new building structure extends on top of the existing building. We designed solutions to not overwhelm the existing infrastructure.”

ESD’s role with the historic pier has been extensive, including recent work on The Yard.

“Leveraging our long association with the Pier and previous projects was helpful to know where to begin the challenging site review to locate the existing MEP infrastructure, pathway opportunities and limitations,” Burggraaff said.

Our Mission is to Improve Society Through the Built Environment.
