Moving 2,000 employees from its suburban campus in Libertyville to downtown Chicago, Motorola Mobility is now the Merchandise Mart’s largest tenant and occupies the top four floors of the building. The global corporate headquarters boasts an open plan concept with exposed MEP to align with the client’s vision of a fluid and collaborative work environment.
ESD provided critical stewardship to consolidate the client’s existing electronics and test lab space by approximately 50% in the new location. We led the data gathering efforts and provided essential support in the programming efforts allowing Motorola Mobility the time and flexibility to complete their change management process while maintaining the aggressive schedule. In order to meet continuous cooling loads from the labs and technology spaces, we designed dedicated MEP infrastructure including a new electrical service, ventilation system and active chilled beam cooling system.
Not only are Motorola Mobility’s offices LEED Platinum certified, the design team’s adherence to aggressive lighting power reduction benchmarks, along with the use of daylight harvesting and high-efficiency MEP systems, helped the client achieve a $300,000 incentive from the local utility.
