Position Summary

We are looking for an experienced Automation Project Engineer to join our growing Chicago team and apply your critical thinking skills to help us develop solutions that impact people’s health, comfort, productivity, safety, and connectivity. 

As Automation Project Engineer, you will lead the technical design of multiple projects with exceptional results and use your extensive industry experience and expertise to provide technical support to the team. You will lead, discipline and direct the work of other Project Engineers and Project Designers and act as a mentor and resource for their team. You will contribute to all aspects of the Automation Team to include: business development, project management, and automation project production along with varied engineering and project management duties related to evaluating, designing, and constructing projects. As Automation Project Engineer, you will meet the client’s needs from project conception to completion.

Essential duties and responsibilities

  • Develops automation design and assessment opportunities for clients to grow Automation Team services independent of new construction projects.
  • Performs technical and project management duties.
  • Develops basic system designs within own discipline under minimal supervision; this includes the ability to offer solutions to general technical problems.
  • Works in conjunction with senior project engineer to prepare project deliverables per the client’s intent and scope of work outlined in ESD's proposal. 
  • Follows ESD’s quality management process; reviews project deliverables prior to submission to quality assurance/quality control (QA/QC) reviewer. 

Performs duties to assist the Project Manager as follows: 

  • Gives input or creates plans to complete tasks within the project timeline and budget, identifies required precursors from other disciplines in a timely fashion.
  • Develops an understanding of all ESD service offerings.  
  • Meets or exceeds utilization goals and adheres to project budget. 
  • Identifies and reports potential roadblocks and competing client and co-worker priorities that may inhibit the ability to maintain the project scope, schedule, and budget.  

Participates in the engineering/professional community to build personal knowledge and professional growth (e.g., attends meetings/ seminars/conferences).

Qualifications / Skill-sets

  • Detailed knowledge of building automation systems, equipment, and associated applications.
  • Experience with programmable logic controller (PLC)/industrial controls a plus.
  • Possess basic knowledge of engineering practices within own discipline. 
  • Knowledgeable of accepted design and construction concepts, practices and procedures. 
  • Able to read, analyze and interpret technical documents and specifications, technical procedures and government regulations.
  • Proficient in applicable software (i.e., CAD and Revit). 
  • Exhibits effective communication skills to communicate the scope and coordinate tasks with vendors and co-workers.
  • Displays effective organization and time management skills with projects, reports, and other duties; effectively manages multiple priorities. 

Education / Certification / Experience

  • Bachelor's or master's degree in electrical/mechanical engineering or a related field required.
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in automation design and consulting for tenant improvement projects, new construction buildings, central plant work, existing facility upgrades, or related markets.
  • Extensive experience with Microsoft programs/tools such as Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Professional Engineering (PE) license a bonus.
  • Accredited engineering degree or equivalent experience required.
