Position Summary

The Energy Engineer performs basic technical and project management duties under the supervision of an Operations Director and Project Manager. Understands and identifies project requirements and performs independent technical work on basic tasks within one’s own discipline.

Essential duties and responsibilities

  • Evaluate complex energy efficiency projects by independently performing energy and financial analysis for building systems including HVAC, DHW, renewables, DER, Cogeneration, lighting and plug loads
  • Perform preliminary and detailed facility audits to identify and develop energy conservation measures
  • Leverage experience and ESD standards to identify required data to perform engineering calculations
  • Develop detailed scope of work for generating cost estimates related to mechanical, electrical, plumbing and control systems for energy efficiency projects
  • Prepare financial analysis with an understanding of ROI, life cycle costing and internal rate of return
  • Prepare reports for energy audits, retro-commissioning (RCx) and monitoring-based commissioning (MBCx) projects
  • Assist in determining eligibility of utility incentives for projects on a national scale
  • Investigate and evaluate new technologies, processes, and products related to energy engineering field
  • Develop and deliver customer presentations related to ESD’s energy efficiency service offerings
  • Prepare project deliverables per the client’s intent and scope of work in ESD's proposal. 
  • Follow ESD’s quality management process; review project deliverables before submitting for QA/QC 
  • Actively participate in the engineering/professional community to build personal knowledge and professional growth
  • Gives input or creates plans to complete tasks within the project timeline and budget
  • Meets or exceeds utilization goals and adheres to project budget.

Qualifications / Skill-sets

  • Possesses advanced knowledge of engineering practices within own discipline 
  • Able to conceptualize basic building systems while understanding interactions with other components
  • Possesses comprehensive knowledge of nomenclature, design techniques, materials, details, system components, construction techniques, related engineering systems, and building codes 
  • Able to read, analyze, and interpret technical documents, specifications and technical procedures
  • Strong communicator who effectively conveys scope and coordination items to clients and peers
  • Adept at writing comprehensive reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.
  • Displays effective organization and time management skills with projects, reports and other duties; effectively manages multiple priorities and is punctual and dependable. 

Education / Certification / Experience

  • Accredited engineering degree or equivalent experience required.
  • Minimum 4 years related industry experience preferred.
  • Registered professional engineer (PE) license or other professional certification based on area of expertise preferred.
