The Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat (CTBUH) technical guides – featuring glossy pages with colorful graphics – are avidly read by those in the tall-building industry. And the next one is starting to take shape.
Chaired by Mehdi Jalayerian, the CTBUH MEP Working Group held its kickoff meeting as part of the wider annual Leaders Meeting at the CTBUH 2018 Middle East Conference in Dubai. The primary objective of the Group is to produce a Technical Guide entitled “Stack Effect in High-Rise Buildings.” The intent of this publication is to offer design considerations for tall buildings in extreme climates that experience Stack Effect, a phenomenon that occurs when the difference between outdoor and indoor air temperature produces high pressure within a building, causing potential issues ranging from fire control to elevator door operation.
This inaugural meeting established the strategy and scope of the guide, as well as reviewed and broadened content assignment responsibilities, beginning with a proposed table of contents. Working Group members volunteered to write chapters on Environmental Considerations, Building Massing and Envelope, Energy and Natural Ventilation, among others. The group discussed the need for vertical transportation expertise in order to sufficiently develop a chapter called Vertical Transportation Considerations, and agreed they would collaborate with the Vertical Transportation Working Group to identify a contributor. The basic heading structure was established for the case studies to be included in the publication, and included baseline information about their conditions, such as season and temperature, air pressure and wind velocity.
