Systems Administrator-IT-Chicago

Position Summary

The Systems Administrator works directly with the Senior Systems Manager to develop, implement, and maintain the Information Technology infrastructure systems for the company. He/she coordinates IT infrastructure under the direction of the Senior Systems Manager for maximum availability. The Systems Administrator has the authority to develop, implement and maintain all new and upgrade technology projects approved by the Senior Systems Manager. 

Essential duties and responsibilities

Under the direction of the Senior Systems Manager assist in installing, configuring and maintaining and supporting the following:

  • Servers (file, application, virtual, print, etc.)
  • Network (local and wide area)
  • Storage, including backup and archiving of data 
  • Internet connectivity
  • IP Phone system

  • Manage, monitor and evaluate the different activities related to computer systems and electronic processing of information by doing the following: 
  • Monitor all systems for capacity and operational efficiency issues
  • Support and coordinate IT infrastructure for maximum availability 
  • Proactively trouble-shoot IT infrastructure related issues
  • Diagnose and provide solutions to recurring problems that require special attention
  • Determine the practicality of changes and modification of systems 
  • Save and secure data and software 
  • Ensure efficient working of all IT equipment and hardware
  • Monitor and ensure compliance to all standards and policies
  • Communicate system/technical concerns to Senior Systems Manager
  •  
  • Coordinate and execute the installation of new IT infrastructure hardware/software; install, test, and monitor the operation of system hardware and software; configure hardware and software to meet department and company needs 
  • Provide support and maintenance of server, storage and network resources; use various utilities to trouble-shoot, repair, and verify configuration of servers 
  • Maintain various records and documentation for department computer systems
  • Interpret and apply information from technical manuals; communicate on technical issues with individuals with varying degrees of computer familiarity 
  • Participate in relevant professional development annually to increase knowledge and remain current in IT practices and their changes in the design services business and construction industry (ex. participate in educational opportunities; read professional publications; maintain personal networks) 
  • Actively participate in the IT professional community to build personal knowledge and professional growth and convey qualifications to the public (ex. attend meetings/seminars/conferences)
  • Other activities as directed by the Senior Systems Manager

Qualifications / Skill-sets

  • Demonstrates thorough understanding of ESD information technology infrastructure; capable of adding to or modifying it
  • Shows appreciation for ESD’s core business objectives and how IT supports those objectives
  •  
  • Possess knowledge and understanding of the following: 
  • Server and networking concepts, architectures and solutions
  • Storage, backup and archiving concepts, architectures and solutions
  • Functions and operations of computers
  • Commercial computer software including database software and local and wide area networks (LANs & WANs), including hardware/software installation 
  • General principles of office automation, and computer systems analysis 
  •  
  • Demonstrates initiative, self-discipline, a positive attitude and strong work ethic with attention given to detail
  • Adept at problem solving; able to respond to unforeseen events that can have a direct impact on services to users
  • Develops and maintains constructive and cooperative working relationships with others

Education / Certification / Experience

  • Associate or Bachelor Degree in Information Technology related major (preferred) or 2 years of relevant technical work experience (minimum)
  • Possess appropriate professional credentials 
  • Microsoft Server Certification (preferred)
  • Network Certification (preferred)
  • Other Back Office Application Certification (preferred)
