Senior Electrical Engineer - San Francisco Office

Position Summary

We have a unique opportunity for an enterprising Senior Electrical Engineer to join our San Francisco team. You will help shape the future of our San Francisco electrical department, with full support and resources from our successful parent office in Chicago.

As Senior Electrical Engineer you will guide the technical design of projects as subject matter expert and serve as a mentor and resource to the technical team. You will delegate and lead work of Project Engineers and Designers and be responsible to meet client expectations from concept to completion to ensure quality execution occurs during the design process. You will also contribute to business development and promotional activities as needed.

Essential duties and responsibilities

  • Manages ESD’s technical project process and scope of work within own discipline; reviews schedule and budgeted hours; finds and resolves all inconsistencies with Project Manager.
  • Delegates tasks to Project Engineers and Designers within own discipline as appropriate.
  • Follows ESD’s quality management process; conducts project reviews and approvals before all quality assurance/quality control (QA/QC) reviews done by the technical authority.
  • Maintains strong client relations; able to understand and articulate project and design requirements, progress and troubleshooting to clients and technical staff.
  • Coordinates well with all disciplines to integrate work and client requests into design.
  • Acts as supervisor and resource to technical design team; supports and assists staff education and development.
  • Participates in the engineering/professional community to build personal knowledge and professional growth (e.g. attends meetings/seminars/conferences and/or writes articles for trade magazines).
  • Partners with human resources, recruiting, and the operations director to identify, interview, and onboard engineers to grow the San Francisco MEP design team.
  • Partners with practice leader, operations director, team lead, and project manager to prepare and process RFPs.
  • Assists overall marketing and business development efforts in partnership with the operations director.

Qualifications / Skill-sets

  • Thorough knowledge of electrical engineering practices and principles and basic knowledge of such in other disciplines (e.g. fire alarm, low voltage, lighting controls etc.).
  • Proficient with Title 24, California Code, Energy Code, National Electrical Code (NEC), and other applicable codes and standards (i.e. ASHRAE 90.1).
  • Proven ability to design commercial electrical systems; able to conceptualize and develop solutions for multifaceted systems and interactions with disparate components.
  • Strong communicator who conveys scope, schedule and budget to clients, co-workers and technical teams; possesses high-level of accountability to firm, team, and client and expects same of others. 
  • Adept at writing comprehensive reports, business correspondence and procedural manuals.
  • Equipped to analyze and solve problems, as well as to train and motivate team; organized and attentive to detail; flexible and collaborative. Sets model for leadership and teamwork to earn peer trust and respect. 
  • Able to independently resolve complex problems within the engineer’s discipline.

Education / Certification / Experience

  • Professional Engineer (PE) license or professional certification based on expertise required.
  • Accredited electrical engineering degree or equivalent experience required.
  • Minimum 7 years of experience preferred in electrical design and consulting for tenant improvement, new construction, central plant work, existing facility or other related markets OR 5 years as ESD employee (ESD internship counts as ½ year).
  • Experience with AutoCAD, Revit, lighting calculations preferred.
