Position Summary

We are looking for an Operations Director (OD) to join our Chicago High Performance Buildings Team to handle the operations of this Business Unit. The OD is responsible for leadership, project execution, quality management, project contracting, staffing, human resource coordination, employee and client satisfaction, employee training and support of firmwide initiatives. You will work with ODs to manage resources, the Technical Services team for project risk and QA/QC, Business Development to help meet sales goals, with marketing to develop materials and project close-out data; with accounting for financial matters; with HR for employee matters, and with Practice Leaders (PL) to support the vision, marketing, business development and strategic planning of the Business Unit.

Essential duties and responsibilities

  • Help PL develop operations plan to pinpoint revenue, profitability, utilization, and resource needs to meet the vision, strategy, and goals of the unit and company.
  • Plan and manage staffing and QA/QC need to achieve business plan, deliver projects, upkeep client relations, develop new business, and position the market vertical to achieve long term goals.
  • Monitor project financial performance and financial data to improve profitability. 
  • Prepare and oversee project operational budgets.  Plan effective strategies to successfully execute and ensure financial well-being of the project.
  • Review, produce, and upkeep RFP and contracts; engage legal counsel to mitigate risk as needed.
  • Review performance of studio leaders, projects, direct reports, business goals and studio/verticals to ensure operations and financial progress meet goals. 
    Provide reviews and summary reports if corrective action is needed for the following:
  • Technical issues
  • QA/QC issues
  • Client satisfaction
  • Contract status
  • Profitability
  • Business development activities
  • Manpower resources
  • Work in progress
  • Invoicing
  • Accounts receivable
  • Employee turnover
  • HR issues
  • Establish structures, work schedules, duties, and accountabilities to evaluate staff performance.
  • Collaborate with PLs and client executives (KARM’s) to coordinate, discuss, implement, and manage operational plans.  Help develop strategic plans for operational activity.
  • Review annual employee performance and career development plans prepared by team supervisors.
  • Implement employee performance, improvement, discipline, and documentation strategy.

Qualifications / Skill-sets

  • Demonstrate strong written, oral and presentation skills with the ability to discuss technical and business concepts to a variety of audiences, including executive level technical decision-maker; articulates ideas and solutions clearly when dealing with complex and uncertain situations.
  • Experience in managing engineering business operations and finances.
  • Strong project management and financial background.
  • Strong client and employee interfacing capabilities.
  • Demonstrates extensive knowledge and leadership of engineering practices and procedures.
  • Ability to think critically and analytically to create, convey, and deploy engineering and business strategies.
  • Possess high motivation, and ability to articulate and lead independently to execute with attention to detail; make timely decisions.
  • Demonstrates initiative, self-discipline, a positive attitude and strong work ethic with attention given to detail.

Education / Certification / Experience

  • BS/Master’s Degree in engineering.
  • Relevant Licensure and Certification for market segment.
  • MBA is a plus.
  • 15+ years of consulting specifying engineering, focused in High Performance Buildings.
